First and goal is looking forward to the playoffs. Best local bets to reach the Super Six in Tuscaloosa are the usual suspects — Russellville and Deshler. Longshots — Lexington and Hubbard.

Couple of things: I only dropped Luverne one spot after losing to t.R. Miller by five points; I still think Hartselle is better than Cullman.

it’s getting harder instead of easier to figure out the top 10 each week.  if russellville wins its next two, I’ll find a spot for it in the top 10. I’ll move florence up, too, if the falcons can win this week and next week.

for some reason, lexington doesn’t get a lot of attention around the state even though it beat Tanner. had the Bears not lost to Lauderdale county, I’m pretty sure they’d be in the poll at about No. 6 or 7.

This was probably the toughest week to vote because so many top-10 teams lost. I moved T.R. Miller to No. 1 in 3A, and I didn’t penalize Brooks very much for losing to an Athens team that probably should be in the Top 10.

Had to drop russellville out of the top 10 with a second straight loss.

I put Florence at No. 10. The Falcons are going to make the playoffs — only question is whether it will be at No. 2 or No. 3 providing they don’t overlook Sparkman and Grissom. The Decatur game is a tossup.

I also didn’t penalize Lexington too much for its loss to Lauderdale County. They played on a short week and LCHS is one of the most improved teams in the area.

I can’t vote Muscle Shoals in the top 10 yet even though Scott Basden’s team has doubled its win total from a year ago. Trojans need a win against one of the power teams in the region and then I think they’ll start to get more respect. That said, the Trojans are one of the top stories this year in the Shoals.

must-see games

Games i’d pay to check out this week in the Shoals:
Athens-Brooks; Deshler-Colbert County; Florence-Austin; Lauderdale County-Lexington; Muscle Shoals-Wilson.

Good QB not many people around here know about — Wayne County’s Tyler Rice. he’s 32 of 53 passing for 7 TDs and no picks. Also has 4 rushing TDs on 18 attempts.

week four poll vote, other stuff

Here’s how I voted this week. Got lexington at No. 5. They’ll get tested this week by lauderdale county.
I swapped hartselle and lexington this week in Class 5A, and also like athens in that region, too. Muscle Shoals needs a quality win in the region before I’ll consider voting for the Trojans. It’s going to come down to East Limestone and Muscle Shoals for the final playoff spot.
Best game on the board this week — probably athens at brooks.
We’ve got monday football today — Red Bay at Cherokee and the end of Lexington-Phil Campbell. not sure what happens if there is more bad weather.

Ralston Turner commits to LSU

Muscle Shoals basketball standout Ralston Turner, a 6-6 shooting guard, decided Monday night to play at LSU.
The senior called coach Trent Johnson early Monday evening to inform him of his decision. Turner visited LSU this past weekend. He also made a visit to Notre Dame earlier in September, and cancelled visits to Butler and Georgia. Turner said Alabama coach Anthony Grant was supposed to visit him Wednesday night.
Turner averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds this past season.
